Stay for the rally, explore north-east Scotland

The countdown to Rally Scotland 2027 is under way. The return of the FIA World Rally Championship to the UK is reason enough to head for north-east Scotland. But with the rally running from 28 September to 3 October, there’s a tempting question: why stop at the finish control?

Add a night or two before or after the event and discover more of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

A gateway to adventure

The region that will host the championship’s gravel stages also offers clifftop castles, sweeping beaches, lively city streets and countryside made for walking.

Autumn brings golden woodland, quieter coastal paths and a welcome excuse to settle into a cosy restaurant after a day outdoors.

Our partners at VisitAberdeenshire have plenty of ideas to help you plan a longer break.

Browse their Things to Do guide for history, culture and outdoor activities, then explore Food & Drink for everything from fresh seafood to local whisky and welcoming cafes.

From coast to castle: Rally Scotland trip inspiration

Here are four favourites from the Rally Scotland team to get you started.

Stay like a Traitor. Has the BBC’s Celebrity Traitors left you yearning for turrets, secret staircases and grand dining rooms? Aberdeenshire has more castles per acre than anywhere else in the UK, along with an impressive collection of tower houses and stately homes.

Some you can actually stay in, including Craigston Castle near Turriff and Leslie Castle near Insch. Explore VisitAberdeenshire’s guide to castle stays and experiences for your own dramatic escape.

Explore the autumn coastline. The North Sea coast is at its most atmospheric in autumn. Discover the dunes and cliffs around Forvie National Nature Reserve, or pair a stroll on Sandend Beach with a view of Findlater Castle’s ruins.

The autumn coastal walks guide is packed with inspiration.

Four days across the city, coast and countryside. If you have time to explore properly, follow VisitAberdeenshire’s four-day itinerary.

It combines Aberdeen’s maritime history and galleries with Royal Deeside’s castles, striking coastal views and stops that make the most of the region’s food and drink.

24 hours in Aberdeen. Short on time? The 24 Hours in Aberdeen itinerary makes a strong case for one extra night. Start with coffee on Belmont Street, visit Aberdeen Art Gallery and Provost Skene’s House, then discover the city’s street art and maritime heritage.

Plan your visit

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are easier to reach than you might think, with connections by road, rail and air.

VisitAberdeenshire’s Getting Here and Getting Around  guides explain your travel options and how to explore the wider region, whether by public transport or hire car.

Already booked your rally accommodation? Consider extending your stay. And if your trip is still taking shape, start with Rally Scotland’s official hotel booking service.

An extra day or two could mean a castle visit, a coastal walk or more time in Aberdeen. It’s worth checking the options before finalising your travel plans.
