Why north-east Scotland is ready to host the WRC

When the championship returns to the UK in 2027, north-east Scotland is set to offer a rally built around the things that matter most: quick access, compact logistics, a serious sporting challenge and a setting made for world-class motorsport. Aberdeen and the surrounding region tick every box.

At the centre of it all is P&J Live, the north of Scotland’s largest live events venue, which will host rally headquarters and the Service Park. Opened in 2019 at a cost of £330m, P&J Live is a modern base for a world championship event, with indoor facilities to host rally operations and attractions, and a vast underground service area where spectators can get close to the cars and crews. That matters in rallying, where the Service Park is the beating heart of the event.

Around it sits the rest of the package. International transport links, hotel capacity and established event infrastructure are major reasons north-east Scotland was selected. Aberdeen International Airport is right next to the rally hub, which means teams, officials, media and fans will arrive at an event built for easy movement.

Then there is the landscape. Every WRC round should feel like a different chapter, shaped by its own visual identity, scenery and character. North-east Scotland’s dramatic mix of rugged coastline, forests, castles and, of course, the culture and hospitality of the Granite City puts it in a class of its own.

M-Sport founder and FIA Deputy President for Sport Malcolm Wilson summed it up well. The roads, he said, are among the best in the UK, while the venue gives organisers the platform to build something very special. Add strong backing from the Scottish Government, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council, and Rally Scotland has the ingredients not just to host the WRC, but to set a benchmark for what a new round can offer.
